Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. has launched an application called ‘Fouling Analysis’ as part of its ‘FOCUS’ big data project. This tool analyses marine biofouling on ships, assessing the condition and causes of fouling using sensor and voyage data. It helps optimize maintenance, such as hull cleaning and painting, to reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
The application can monitor propulsion performance over time, visualize fouling data with 3D hull photos and evaluate antifouling paints. By integrating insights from MOL Ship Management Co., Ltd., it is being used for the maintenance of around 500 ships. An AI-driven analysis model is also being developed to improve maintenance planning and contribute to environmental sustainability.
This initiative is part of MOL's broader "Digital Transformation" strategy, which aims to improve productivity, optimize operations and support its "BLUE ACTION 2035" management vision.
